The Official Web site for Diana Hacker

Welcome to the official site for handbooks by Diana Hacker. From here, you can learn more about the books or access a variety of resources through each book’s companion site.

For more than thirty years, Diana Hacker was a member of the English faculty at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland, where she class-tested her handbooks with thousands of college writers. Hacker handbooks are popular because they work as references that students can—and do—use on their own.

Quite often, references are the most complicated part of academic writing. Although the internet is available 24/7, it doesn’t mean that finding reliable resources for a paper is always quick. An average student wastes about 40 minutes on the web before the first helpful page is found. As well as googling “write my essay for me” and ordering a ready-made paper, handbooks by Diana Hacker save a lot of precious time.

Rules for Writers, Sixth Edition

Rules for Writers succeeds because it has always been grounded in classroom experience. By looking at her own students’ needs, Diana Hacker created an affordable and practical classroom tool that also works as a quick reference. The hand-edited sentences, corner tabs, clean and uncluttered design, color-coded documentation sections, exercises with answers in the back, and student-friendly index terms help students to find—and understand—the information they need to solve writing problems in any college course.

In the Hacker tradition, the new contributing authors—Nancy Sommers, Tom Jehn, Jane Rosenzweig, and Marcy Carbajal Van Horn—have crafted solutions for the writing problems of today’s college students. Together they give us a new edition that provides more help with academic writing and research and that works better for a wider range of multilingual students.
